The African football governing body, CAF, has strongly condemned the treatment of Nigeria’s Super Eagles in Libya, where they were stranded for 15 hours at an abandoned airport without basic necessities like food and water. This unacceptable incident has sparked outrage across the continent, highlighting the need for improved standards and stricter accountability in African football.
CAF has launched an investigation into the incident, referring the matter to its Disciplinary Board. The outcome will set a critical precedent, demonstrating the consequences for such misconduct and whether African football can evolve into a competitive and ethically sound space.
“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it had been informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘’Super Eagles’’) and their technical team were stranded in disturbing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land by the Libyan authorities,” a statement read.
“The matter has been referred to the CAF Disciplinary Board for investigation and appropriate action will be taken against those who violated the CAF Statutes and Regulations.”
Nigeria’s boycott of the match puts their campaign in jeopardy, with Libya potentially being awarded points if CAF rules the match a forfeit. The Super Eagles currently lead Group D with seven points, while Libya remains at the bottom with only one point.
